Women's Health Q & A

What is women’s health?

Women’s health focuses on female sexual and reproductive health. But women’s healthcare at Mansfield Primary Care Doctors goes beyond essential care.

Their supportive team listens to your concerns and offers holistic care for your physical, mental, and emotional challenges. Their sensitivity and compassion put women at ease, whether they need a well-woman visit or help with pelvic pain, heavy periods, or other problems.

What symptoms do women’s health concerns cause?

Mansfield Primary Care Doctors frequently help women experiencing:

  • Irregular menstrual periods
  • Heavy or painful periods
  • Skipping menstrual periods
  • Pelvic pain
  • Breast lumps
  • Unusual vaginal discharge
  • Frequent urination
  • Burning when urinating

Your provider learns about your medical history, completes a full exam, and runs lab tests to determine the condition responsible for your symptoms.

What services are available through women’s health?

The Mansfield Primary Care Doctors team provides comprehensive women’s healthcare with services such as:

  • Pelvic exams
  • Birth control
  • Breast exam (breast cancer screening)
  • Pap smears (cervical cancer screening)
  • Menopause care
  • Hormone replacement therapy
  • Sexually transmitted disease (STD) testing and treatment
  • Immunizations
  • Health screenings
  • Mental health services
  • Chronic disease management
  • Medical weight loss

They also diagnose and treat health conditions that affect women more than men, such as thyroid disease and osteoporosis.

While the team treats many conditions, you can be confident knowing they will identify potential problems and refer you to an OB/GYN specialist if needed.

When should I schedule a women’s health exam?

You should schedule a women’s health appointment whenever you have symptoms, questions, or concerns.

For routine care, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends the following:

Teens

Teens should have their first reproductive health visit between the ages of 13 and 15. This visit focuses on introducing them to women’s health and answering their questions. They only need a pelvic exam if they’re sexually active, have symptoms, or want birth control.

Adults

Women should have their first Pap smear when they turn 21. Then, they should have a Pap test at least every three years (more often if they have a high risk for cervical cancer). They may also get a human papillomavirus (HPV) test every five years.

Well-woman exams

This is a comprehensive preventive care exam evaluating your reproductive and overall health. As such, well-woman exams should be scheduled yearly, just like an annual checkup.
